Come and learn about Ignaz Semmelweis, a brilliant nineteenth-century Hungarian physician whose medical specialty was gynecology and obstetrics. In his career, he had diligently sought and largely succeeded in solving the riddle of the nature and origin of the contagious disease of puerperal or childhood fever. Socially inept and acerbic in temperament, he had failed however to win the allegiance and ready acceptance of the majority of his professional colleagues for his discoveries. In the dispute that followed he suffered a tragic personal breakdown that eventually resulted in his institutionalization and death, with vindication finally coming a decade or so later.
